Destiny Rising
NetEase is currently riding high on the massive success of Marvel Rivals, but I think some people may forget that NetEase is also the developer behind Destiny Rising, the mobile game that recently finished a closed alpha test that went over…decently well, with most of the existing Destiny community.
We’ve talked to death how Destiny 2 is in a bad place right now as the series needs something new and fresh to get people back into it. That is likely not coming within Destiny 2 itself, and without Destiny 3 arriving this decade, if ever, the only remaining near-term option may in fact be…Destiny Rising.
Is it better than Destiny at its core? No, but it is new, and that alone may be enough for some players to believe it can fill that void for a while, forgiving even the gacha aspects of the game if it’s just fun at baseline.
I think Destiny Rising has at least the potential to be a win for the IP, but if this is meant to target Destiny players (it often does feel like a Destiny game for mobile players rather than a mobile game for Destiny players) I think it needs to prioritize one thing in particular, which would be a desktop client for the game.
Destiny Rising
There is still a large portion of Destiny players who play on PC, and would be certainly more likely to play Destiny Rising if it was on PC as well. Yes, you can accomplish this with emulation and other methods, but it sure would be nice to be able to do this officially without any third party shenanigans.
PC already appears to be on NetEase’s radar to some extent. The game’s support account had this to say about the possibility:
“Optimization for various mobile devices is still ongoing. We recommend that you prioritize using devices that meet the required specifications for testing. In future stages, we will suggest to the developers to enhance support for [PC] emulators based on player feedback.”
That said, this is still based around emulation, rather than NetEase developing its own cleaned-up PC version of the game. I would much rather have that instead of relying on emulation alone, and I think a good chunk of the potential playerbase would as well. The game already plays better on controller than with touch controls anyway. Add M+K to that and there you go.
No, I do not expect Destiny Rising to have even a fraction of the success of Marvel Rivals, NetEase’s new golden goose, but if anything, they’ve shown that they can put out something exceptional, and there is a lot to be said about just how badly Destiny players are looking for truly new content and the appeal of starting from scratch, even if yes, it’s a hero-based gacha game.
